Artist Statement

When smoke is photographed, it takes a non-uniform, kinetic subject and portrays it in a small frame of time, which allows for many unique images. Although the subject form differs from image to image, repeating patters can be seen across the series of photographs. Using a scaled down mock studio, I was able to control certain variables such as, background and foreground, lighting and directing, and thickness or thinness of the smoke. The main aspect of smoke that drew me into this project was the space-like nature of it. To enhance this idea, I focused on keeping the blacks as absorbing as possible in each image.  The end goal that I sought to achieve was focused on taking many unique forms and arranging them through observable connections, where they are able to be seen as a whole.
