Gallery Activity

Lara Woolfson

When I first approached this image there were two things I noticed. The first was the actual size of the picture. It was much larger than the rest hung around the gallery which definitely beaconed me toward it because the detail was easier to see. After I was in front of it and started to analyze it the second thing I noticed was the thickness, or the particular fatness of the yarn. The reason this was brought to my attention so quickly was because everything else in the frame seems pretty normal to some extent; the normal living room scene.

As I continued to look, the next thing I noticed was that the eyes, feet, and hands were the only skin exposed. This is not something I completely understand the symbolism in. At first I thought it was because feet, hands, and eyes are part of the primary body part grouping that we think of for use and importance. I also noticed that because of the thick knitted clothing, the exposed body parts look smaller than they normally would and were more subtle. This was part of the reason why it was not the first thing I noticed when looking at the frame.

The figure in the middle is really what bridges the top of the image to the bottom of the image mostly based on color for me. Because the couch is blue and much darker that the rest of the frame, the person in the middle, whose shirt is red, is really matching the wall behind and cutting across the couch into the floor. This is where it meets with the more yellow bottom section of the image given the pants and oriental carpet. If the person would have been wearing cooler colors or darker clothing, this would have separated the frame into 3 sections making it more awkward for the eye to flow across the image.

One of the last pieces of composition I noticed was the picture hanging on the wall. I tried to image it without that which in my mind would make the room seem much more empty. I think the very rigid, angular structure of the picture frame contrasts the soft edges of the couch very well. I also feel that this picture hanging in the back sets a relaxed feel of the scene. I don't know the reason that the photographer picked that photo in particular but I feel that it works well there in terms of "normalizing" the reset of the scene.

When I was taking this picture I was thinking of verticals with varying exposures throughout the frame. The bottom is split from the top by the one horizontal cut which separates the dark shadows from the highlights. Even though the SLS building is facing away from the sun and is in shadow, it is still bright enough to see detail in the brick. Compositionally, the vines crawling up the side of the building point your eye in the direction of the light source in the top right corner.

Homework RED+composition

Pictures I chose:

Pictures classmates chose:

                1. The clear difference between the two sets of images that I chose and my classmates chose is the lighting and exposer. The pictures I chose were much brighter and had more direct light on the subjects. The pictures that my classmates chose were much darker and had more of a "glowing" red rather than a popping bright red. The composition of the photos are somewhat similar because of the depth of field and closeup-ness of them.

               2.

Out of the three images, this was my favorite and stood out the most to me. The main reason for that is because of the angle that the photo was taken makes the mountain look natural there. The bottom of the billboard lines up perfectly with the horizon of the landscape, creating the illusion of a lone peak. I really like the color composition in this photo with green on the bottom and blue up top. The green is very dry and looks almost barren but transitions up into the blue from the skyline and the lake at the bottom of the mountain on the billboard which has a hint of irony.
The fence in the foreground stretches to the back toward the horizon drawing your eye to the back of the picture where the sky starts and stretches upward. The clouds in this image are also very interesting because they almost emanate from the billboard. The middle of the picture has clouds closer to the top of the billboard but as you move toward the edges, the clouds bend toward the corners.

Contact Sheet Color Theory

The reason I chose red for my color was simply because it stands out to me the most in everyday life. It is much easier for me to notice red compared to blue or yellow. I found that if red is in sunlight, it is impossible to miss.
Red symbolizes to me:
1. Power
2. Target
3. Explosive
4. Warmth
5. Fast
